    Known as energy healing, Reiki is an alternative therapy & a method of meditation.

    It emerged in Japan in the late 1800s.

    Traditionally, the practitioner transfers universal energy from their palms to the patient.

    There have been many forms of energy healing throughout history.

    Some advocates claim it works by influencing the body’s energy fields.

    The effectiveness of Reiki cannot be proven scientifically, which is why there is some controversy surrounding it.

    Despite this, the popularity of Reiki is growing, as many people who receive it claim it works.

    What is Reiki Meditation?

    Reiki combines the Japanese words rei, which means spirit, divinity, or mysticism, with ki, which denotes one’s life force, consciousness.

    In Japan, it is referred to as the “breath of life”.

    Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk, invented Reiki in the 1920s as a way to heal the body naturally.

    Reiki is based on the premise that you are more prone to illness and stress if your ki levels are low or blocked, similar to Chinese acupuncture.

    During Reiki treatment, the practitioner lays their hands on certain parts of the body to stimulate ki flow, which promotes relaxation and healing.

    Reiki offers a unique approach to healing.

    By using your hands, it involves transferring healing energy into the body, strengthening its physical and mental health.

    The process allows you to experience quietness and silence.

    Meditation experience is also facilitated using symbols and mantras.

    Reiki believes that healing takes place most rapidly when the practitioner is completely involved in the process, therefore this technique stresses being informed and responsible for the Reiki process.

    It is open to everyone regardless of their age, physical ability, or mental state.

    Note: Reiki practitioners do not recommend Reiki as a replacement for Western medicine, especially in cases of serious illness, but believe it supplements more conventional medical treatments.

    How to Do Reiki Meditation (Self Reiki Meditation)

    Reiki takes no time at all to learn and no experience is necessary.

    But it’s best to begin a Reiki attunement with someone who knows the Reiki energy well.

    You can practice this meditation technique even if you haven’t yet been attuned.

    This will allow you to become adept at sensitivity to your own energy channels.

    The difference will become apparent after you become attuned.

    Steps on how to do It

    1. Place yourself in a comfortable sitting or lying position for meditation.
      If you are not accustomed to meditating, try sitting up or lying down – sitting up tends to encourage alertness, lying down usually encourages relaxation.
      Please keep your spine straight if you are able to, but do not push yourself too much.
      Support and comfort are important.
    2. Experience and sense into your TanDen.
      About two finger widths below the belly button and about a third of the way inside lies your TanDen energy centre.
      It’s possible that you might not notice anything right away if you are not used to working with it.
      But cultivate a practice that places your awareness there, and eventually, you will become aware of what’s occurring.
    3. While you breathe in, visualize a beautiful healing light coming down to your TanDen with your breath.
      Alternatively, if you do not visualize, you can simply set a strong intention to invite Reiki into your body through breath, or you might subconsciously know that it’s present there.
    4. During the pause after each breath, imagine your TanDen sending out gentle healing energy throughout your body.
    5. Radiate this positive energy into the universe, to infinity, as you breathe out.
      Exhale deeply and imagine ridding yourself of negative emotions like fear, depression, and anxiety.
      When you send it outward, let it take anything that isn’t serving you anymore.
    6. This can be repeated as many times as you want.
      Those who are new to meditation may want to start out with two or three minutes and build upon that.
    7. After you have completed your meditation, thank the Reiki energy for its presence and acknowledge your dedication to the practice.

    Who Should Try and Who Should Avoid It? 

    Reiki poses no danger to the body or mind.

    It is harmless and does not cause any side effects.

    Practising Reiki is only potentially dangerous if the practitioner is not properly trained or not practising it.

    A person might claim to be practising Reiki when they’re actually acting risky.

    A Reiki practitioner should have trained with a qualified Reiki master before they can deliver the treatment effectively.
